Both Mika and Ilpo come from Turku in Finland, where they got to know one another at the beginning of the 1990s organising Acid House parties as members of the Hyperdelic Housers crew. In 1993 they formed the project with the name Panasonic and a year later the third man, Sami Salo, joined them but left again in 1996. Their first records appeared in the mid-1990s on the fantastic Sähkö label placing all parties firmly on the map of minimal, obscure electronic music. With the release of "A" two years ago they celebrated the loss of the letter from the band's name, which was forced by the small-minded electronics corporation of the same name.
In the mean time, having moved to sunny Barcelona, Pan Sonic fleet-footedly switch between similarly disparate theatres of operation: they perform in an art context at locations such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, officially represent the high-brow culture of their country at the Finnish Embassy in London or underlay a catwalk show in Tokyo for Comme Des Garcons with crackling, humming and rumbling sounds.
Releases on Sähkö, Blast First amongst others; collaborations and remixes for the likes of Ryuchi Sakamoto and Suicide`s Alan Vega.
