Barcelona based visual agitator and cultural activist Solu`s
(Mia Makela) experimental music videos have been widely exhibited in festivals
around the world: e.g. at xfest, impact, sonar... Her style ranges from minimal
abstractions and strongly processed material to multilayered ambiental landscapes.
Mia
also organizes events and workshops, which focus on audiovisual and
hacker culture. She belonged to the media activist group fiftyfifty.org and
is part of femalepressure.net, a network of female electronic music producers.
Mia alos co-organizes Wooshi Wooshi, an initiative that promotes female electronic
currents in the form of events, workshops and cds/dvds. The first wooshiwooshi
event
was organized in Barcelona in June 2003 during SONAR festival. Recently she
has toured Europe
teaming
up with musician Heidi
Mortenson.
Denmark born Mortenson, who was sellected as Resident Artist
2003 at the annual experimental festival LEM, based in Gracia, Barcelona,
is currently a one-woman band playing live concerts (or abstract dj-sets);
experimenting widely from beat boxing to dusty organs and lush noises from
loose cables. Her music is melancholically brave with twisted beats, breaks
and soundscapes of on site recordings. Crisp samples and layers of melodies
are webbed into each other, varied with (reversed) vocals on top. Live on
stage she takes use of machines, effect units, instruments and special-built
microphones for the playing with words & voices.
Toghether Solu and Mortenson have performed live at the Sonar festival in
Barcelona, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, the Greenpeace Rainbow
Warrior boat and
various other locations and events.
