Back in the 1980s when the first synthesisers and sequencers arrived on the market - at that time prohibitively expensive - Thomas Brinkmann began to experiment. The possibility of transforming music storage media into manually programmable sequencers had been discovered by Brinkmann as early as 1978, but it was Mike Ink's "Studio 1" series which inspired him to seriously produce music. After two releases on Profan in 1996, where he remixed the entire Studio 1 back catalogue with the aid of heavily modified turntables, he remixed Richie Hawtin's "Concept" series, which appeared on Minus 8. As Soulcenter, he released a trilogy of albums and has had countless other releases on his own labels Max, Ernst, Max Ernst & Freunde and on numerous other labels like Suppose, Force Inc., A- Musik and NovaMute.
He remixed Depeche Mode's summer hit "I Feel Loved" and worked on new tracks together with his label-mates Richie Hawtin and Mike Ink. Further remix work for Christian Morgenstern, Pluramon, Akufen, Echoboy and the Notwist side project, Tried and Tickled Trio. As well as on his Soul Center project, he is currently working on the live project "Florida" with Marcus Nikolai from Perlon and on some new tracks with Scanner.
